The goal of each of the Museum’s educational program is to use our unique environment to teach science and history concepts in an interactive and fun manner and each program features a tour and hands-on activities.

The USS Hornet Museum offers a unique and exciting overnight experience for individuals, families, and groups. Immerse yourself in the rich history and cutting-edge technology of the iconic aircraft carrier. Choose from a variety of themed overnights to suit your interests, including STEAM, Apollo, Aviation, and Restoration. Engage in hands-on activities, interactive exhibits, and captivating tours led by knowledgeable guides.

Sleep in authentic berthing compartments and wake up to a stunning sunrise over the San Francisco Bay. Whether you’re a history buff, a science enthusiast, or simply looking for a unique family outing, the USS Hornet Museum’s overnight programs offer an unforgettable experience.

Please note that this is a youth program geared towards children, but we accept adult groups on Weekend Calendar nights.

To book your event, we require a Non Refundable $100 deposit and an estimated headcount. Your final payment and headcount will be due 2 weeks before the event.

Program Cost
All prices include Dinner and Breakfast in the original Crew’s Mess, tours throughout the ship, General Admission to the Museum the following day, a frame worthy Certificate, and a commemorative Patch for all youth attending the program. Our pricing tiers are determined by your group type:

FAMILY/SMALL GROUP

*For family and friend groups not affiliated with an established youth organization or company/corporation.

$100 per person for Museum Members/$120 per person for Non-Members.

YOUTH GROUPS & SCOUTING

Weekday rate (Monday-Thursday):$85 per person

*Weekday events are only for organized school or scout groups. Individuals must register for Weekend events.

Night Ops:

Ever wonder how an aircraft carrier works? Come aboard and spend the night living with history on the ultimate overnight adventure and find out how USS Hornet’s sailors lived and worked on this city at sea! Designed for ages 7 and up, this is a perfect group activity for scouts, youth groups, schools, friends, and families!

During the Night Ops Overnight you will tour key areas of the ship to see various spaces and systems and discuss the history, science, and engineering behind them. As you move around the ship, you can participate in several hands-on science stations and demonstrations interspersed with seeing sailors’ living spaces! The experience includes:

  • Sleeping in restored, original sailor sleeping compartments
  • Enjoying Dinner and Breakfast in the original Enlisted Crew’s Mess
  • Learning about this famous aircraft carrier’s daring exploits
  • Touring key areas of the ship and the historic naval aircraft on display
  • Learning about NASA’s Apollo 11 and Apollo 12 missions that put the first men on the moon
  • Earning an overnight crew Patch & Certificate
  • Ample Free Parking

Apollo Overnight:

Don’t miss this opportunity to experience the USS Hornet like never before!

Imagine spending a night aboard the historic ship that recovered the Apollo 11 and 12 missions, where the first men on the moon stepped onto American soil. As the sun dips below the horizon, casting long shadows across the deck, you’ll find yourself immersed in a world of space exploration and adventure.

Your program includes a guided tour of the ship, where you’ll learn about its vital role in the Apollo program. Explore the command center, imagine the excitement and tension as the astronauts returned to Earth, and see the very spot where they were greeted by President Richard Nixon.  See a Command Module that orbited Earth for 92 minutes.

Scavenger Hunt:

Hunt for the Grey Ghost

Overnight Scavenger Hunt (Economy Package)

Discover the secrets of the Grey Ghost as you hunt for clues on our second deck and Hanger Bays during a 2.5-hour organized scavenger hunt as you embark on a thrilling quest to find hidden facts and history. Search the ship’s nooks and crannies, uncovering secrets and learning fascinating facts about the USS Hornet’s history.  As you explore, you’ll feel a deep connection to the men and women who served aboard this vessel, their stories echoing through the ship’s walls.

When dawn breaks, you’ll emerge from your adventure with a newfound appreciation for the USS Hornet and the sacrifices made by those who served on it. As you disembark, you’ll carry with you the memories of a truly unforgettable night, a journey through time aboard a living piece of history.

This evening is exclusively self-guided and does not include meal services or docent-led tours.  However, you can still solve the secrets of the Grey Ghost after dark. Are you willing to join the hunt?

Scout Service

Imagine the thrill of stepping aboard a historic WWII aircraft carrier, a floating city of steel that witnessed some of the most pivotal moments in history. As you work alongside dedicated volunteers, you’ll have the unique opportunity to leave your mark on this iconic vessel.

Preserving History:

  • Ship Service: Contribute to the preservation of the ship by participating in hands-on tasks such as brass polishing, compartment refurbishment, painting, and wood restoration.
  • Community Service: Fulfill your scouting organization’s community service or Duty to Country requirements while making a lasting impact on history.

Privileged Access:

  • Specialty Tours: Enjoy exclusive access to areas of the ship that are typically off-limits to visitors, guided by knowledgeable ship’s crew.
  • Behind-the-Scenes Experience: Gain a firsthand understanding of the day-to-day operations of a WWII aircraft carrier, reliving the lives of those who served on board.

Program Availability and Restrictions:

To check on scheduled overnight programs, please visit our Museum Calendar or click on our Overnight Reservation Application, which has an embedded calendar featuring program dates.

Our overnight programming is available to any organized group (scouts, schools, churches, etc.) and to smaller groups on specific “Small Group Overnight” dates. There is a 30-person minimum, or equivalent cost, if you book on a custom date that does not yet have a scheduled program.

Insurance

All organized groups (ie: Boy Scouts, Boys and Girl Club, public and private schools) must provide a tour permit or proof of insurance that names the Aircraft Carrier Hornet Foundation as an additional insured. Siblings, friends, or other guest are welcome provided they are also covered by the group’s insurance. This does not apply to individual families or friend groups.

Cost

Please see our program details for associated costs. A deposit is required to secure a date for all groups and will be applied toward the total cost.

Adult: Youth Ratio

The recommended adult: youth ratio for ages 9 and under is 1:1. The recommend ratio for 10 and above is 1:6. Children must be supervised at all times. Be prepared to organize into parent/youth teams for crew assignments.

Important Information:

· We can only accommodate vegetarians

· If you are a vegan, gluten free, have a serious food allergy, etc. you will need to bring your own meal options. We have a fridge and microwave for your convenience.

· While the eating area (Mess Deck) is a nut free area, and our food is prepared by a nut free caterer; there are vending machines onboard which serve items that contain nuts that is available to fellow participants.

Sleeping Areas and other Facilities

Our overnight guests get the unique opportunity to sleep in our ship’s original enlisted sleeping compartments! Please keep in mind that we were designed as a World War II aircraft carrier, and you should not expect hotel level accommodations.

Each organized group will receive their own berthing compartment. Berthing assignments are gender integrated unless gender separation is specifically requested by the group. All heads (bathrooms) will be shared with other guests.

Please be aware that you may experience normal ship noises such as creaks and groans during the night.

Equipment to Bring

The berthing compartments are equipped with canvas covered “racks” with foam mattresses. Each person should bring a pillow, fitted sheet, sleeping bag, earplugs, toiletries, hand towel, flashlight, refillable water bottle, a jacket, and a warm hat in cold weather. Scouts are encouraged to wear their uniforms.

Please be aware that you will have to carry your gear up and down steep ladders and over knee knockers. Roller bags are NOT recommended. We highly encourage guests to pack light and use backpacks whenever possible.

Please Do Not Bring

Please do not bring any electronic devices including hairdryers; laser pointers; knives; open flame devices including lighters and matches; or food or drink items (with an exception of meals for those with food allergies). No weapons of any kind allowed. No open toed shoes allowed.

Do I have to stay the entire time?

No, guests are welcome to leave at any time during the program. If you need to leave early, please bring your gear to the exit brow and security will let you off the ship.

Cancellation Policy

We cannot offer refunds. Any credit balance after final payment will be applied to future bookings. No refunds will be distributed upon receipt of final payment. If you are unable to stay on the night selected, your deposit may be applied to another date.

· Changes made 15+ days before your event: no penalty

· Changes made 8-14 days before your event: full credit

· Changes made 2-7 days before your event: half credit

· Changes made same day (including no shows): no credit

To see all available parts of the ship, you will be required to climb steep ladders. Visitors who cannot negotiate steep ladders or who might have claustrophobia or other intense anxieties with heights or tight spaces are advised against taking a Specialty Tour.
