Kurt Libby, Trustee.
Kurt Libby was born and raised in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. He attended the University of Minnesota under an NROTC Regular scholarship and graduated in 1966 with a BA in English and a minor in Business. He graduated from the Navy Supply School in Athens, GA in 1967 and returned to Minnesota to marry Janet Spetz. They moved to Norfolk, VA where Kurt was deployed 6 weeks later on his first Mediterranean Cruise. Kurt went on to the Naval Postgraduate School where he graduated in 1972 with an MS in Management Science (With Distinction). In 1976 he graduated from the Armed Forces Staff College.
From 1967-1994, Kurt’s extensive service duties included Supply Officer USS TERREBONNE PARISH (LST-1156), Assistant Supply Officer USS YELLOWSTONE (AD41) and Supply Officer USS ACADIA (AD-43). His overseas assignments included Naval Support Activity, Viet Nam and Fleet Support Activity Athens, Greece. In the U.S., Kurt was Instructor, Navy Supply Corps School, Athens, GA.; Management Information Center Director, Naval Supply Systems Headquarters, Washington, D.C.; Fitting-out Supply Officer, Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Vallejo, CA.; Senior Supply Management Inspector, COMNAVSURFLANT, Norfolk, VA.; Force Supply Officer and Assistant Chief of Staff for Supply and Financial Management, COMNAVSURFPAC, San Diego, CA. and Commanding Officer, Naval Supply Center, Oakland, CA.
Kurt retired from the Navy in 1994 and worked as a consultant for John J. McMullen Company and later for Resource Consultants Inc. In 1999, Kurt accepted positions with the University of California, Berkeley as Director of Materiel Management then becoming Purchasing Manager of Housing, Dining, and Student Affairs. He retired in 2013.
He continues to actively contribute his expertise on non-profit boards, namely as President, Bay Area Navy Supply Corps Association; the Navy Supply Corps Foundation; Pacific Coast Community Services (dedicated to finding jobs for disabled veterans); Vice Chair, Lake Merritt Breakfast Club Charitable Foundation; Treasurer of the Oakland Navy League, and member of the University of California Retirement Advisory Board. Kurt joined the Aircraft Carrier Hornet Foundation board of trustees in 2006 and was elected Vice Chair in 2007 and 2019.
He enjoys playing golf, motorcycle and bicycle riding, restoring a 1929 Nash automobile and babysitting grandchildren. Kurt and Janet reside in Alameda.
