Victory over Japan (VJ) Day @ the USS Hornet

August 15, 2021 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

The USS Hornet was a major participant in the Pacific Campaign of World War II. We are going to observe the end of the war with an expanded program for the day:

  1. We will be showing the Smithsonian Channel’s “Race to Victory” throughout the day and the movie is free with your paid admission to the Museum. This movie chronicles the last 100 days of the war-from the surrender of Germany to the surrender of Japan.
  2. We will hold a short memorial service for Marine Corps Colonel Dave Severance, who recently passed away at the age of 102, starting at 1 PM. During World War 2 he served as the commanding officer of Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 28th Marines, 5th Marine Division. One of his platoons was the first to raise the US flag over Mount Suribachi (not the famous photo which was the second flag).
