Aircraft on Display

Propeller Aircraft

  • TBM-3E Avenger – WWII torpedo bomber used until the mid-fifties
  • US-2B Tracker – 1960’s Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) utility aircraft used for early detection of submarines
  • T-28B Trojan – Military trainer used by the U.S. Navy & U.S. Air Force in the 1950s to the early 1980s.

Jet Aircraft

  • FJ-2 Fury – 1950’s swept-wing fighter jet; naval version of the Air Force’s F-86 Sabre
  • TA-4J Skyhawk – trainer from the last aggressor squadron, VC-8
  • F8U-1 Crusader – late 1950’s and Vietnam era supersonic fighter; too heavy to land on HORNET’s flight deck
  • S-3B Viking – 1972-2009 Carrier-based, subsonic, all-weather, multi-mission, long range aircraft.
  • F-14A Tomcat – veteran of the Gulf War; too large to fly off the deck of HORNET
  • F-8 Crusader "Clementine" - cockpit section; available for off-ship appearances
  • F-11 Tiger "FiFi" - cockpit section; available for off-ship appearances

Helicopters

  • HUP-1 Retriever – 1950’s search and rescue helicopter designed by Piasecki
  • UH-34D Sea Horse – Vietnam era helicopter
  • SH-2 Seasprite – ship-based helicopter with anti-submarine, anti-surface threat capabiity
  • SH-3H Sea King – Apollo recovery helicopter; appeared in the “Apollo 13” movie
